3 Important Benefits to Starting Small
Go big or go home right? Why start small when you can go big?
I talk to my kids all the time about dreaming big, but so easily I forget that big things can happen from starting small.
When it comes to nutrition and weight loss, we so easily jump to all or nothing. The little steps don’t matter.
Friends, do not make weight loss so stinkin hard for yourself. It doesn’t have to be. No, it’s not magic...it won’t happen overnight.
Try not to hate on the small steps you’re taking that add up. You didn’t roll your eyes at your kid when he took his first steps!
If you can only walk for 10 minutes right now, YOU. ARE. DOING. SOMETHING!
If you want to build a habit and one that lasts you a lifetime, the key is starting small.
1. Starting small takes less time and energy
I often don’t start big things because they feel too overwhelming to start. They take too much for me to think about.
If you want to lose weight, do you start with hitting the gym 3 hours a day for 7 days a week or do you start with just an hour a day for 3 days a week?
The first option sounds more powerful, but is it sustainable? No!
Think about the habits you already do like brushing your teeth or praying before bed. You do them everyday because they are easy and don’t require your brain to think through a bunch of steps.
This is a perfect illustration of the power of starting small. People want the big achievement and they want it fast. And they ended up overestimating their ability.
But when it comes to the long-term, they underestimate the power of starting small and how much they can achieve.
2. Starting small grows your confidence and builds your momentum
When we see success in taking small steps, it gives us confidence to keep going! We build momentum. The more you succeed, the more you want to succeed. If you “go big” and fail, you’ll likely quit.
These small victories are huge. They make us feel good and like we can keep going. Think about how good it feels to have your pants fit a bit bigger as you’ve been changing a few small things. That may seem like a small victory if you have 50 pounds to lose but it will keep you from getting frustrated.
3. Starting small is where it starts.
Amazon started in a garage, and it started with selling books. Now look where its grown to!
Starting small is how you get things done and move forward.
If you are sick and tired of going all in and seeing 0 results, start small! Go for a walk this week. Give up wine one night this week. This is exactly what we preach in the FASTer Way to Fat Loss program I coach for. It’s all a process and progress over perfection.
